Edwin Van Der Sar is a Dutch goal keeper who played for Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United. He also made 130 appearances for the Netherlands National Team and won the UEFA Champions League with two different clubs – Ajax and Manchester United.
Van Der Sar started his career at his hometown club Foreholte but later moved to VV Noordvijk. In 1990, he caught the attention of the then Ajax manager, Louis Van Gaal and got signed by him. He was a big hit at Ajax, as he went on to win the 1991-92 UEFA Cup and later the 1994-95 UEFA Champions League. He also won the Best European Goal keeper award for in 1995. He also played for Ajax in 1996 in the Champions League Final but lost to Juventus in a penalty shootout. In his first full season, Ajax went on to become the Dutch champions and Van Der Sar was awarded the Dutch Goal keeper of the year award. He went to retain the award in the following three seasons. He even scored for Ajax from the spot in an 8-1 win over De Graafschap in the 1997-98 season.
In 1999, Van Der Sar caught the attention of several biggest European Clubs including Manchester United. But he opted to sign for Juventus instead for a fee of around 5 million pounds. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Reggina at the Stadio Delle Alpi. During his 2 year stay at the Turin Club, van Der Sar remained the first choice goal keeper for Carlo Ancelotti. He made 66 appearances for Juventus helping then to finish runners-up twice. In 2001, Juventus signed Italian International goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from Parma for a record fee of 32.6 million Pounds. After Buffon’s arrival, Van Der Sar lost his number 1 spot and moved to newly promoted Fuham for a fee of 7.1 million Pounds.
Van Der Sar signed a 4-year contract at Fulham. He made his debut for Fulham against Manchester United at Old Trafford in a 3-2 defeat. He made 127 league appearances for Fulham and caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson. He signed for Manchester United in June 2005 for a fee around 2 million Pounds. In May 2007, he save a penalty against Manchester City in a 1-0 victory which crowned United Champions. The 2007-08 season was more fruitful despite a groin injury for Van Der Sar as he helped United to another League title. He also saved Anelka’s penalty in the UEFA Champions League Final as United beat Chelsea 6-5 to become the European Champions. In the 2008-09 season, Van Der Sar made the World Record for most Consecutive Clean Sheets. He went on without conceding a goal for 1311 minutes. Van Der Sar also played for United in the final of 2008-09 and 2010-11 Champions League finals but lost to Barcelona both times.
On 28th May, 2011, Van Der Sar retired from active football.
